Indiana became the 19th state in the United States of America on December 11th, 1816. The name Indiana comes from the term, “Land of Indians” as the area was seized by American settlers after the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. The land that Indiana would soon become had special strategic value as it was home to three rivers and was the link from Canada to Louisiana; hence the area’s nickname, “The Crossroads of America.” Indiana also served the role as a crossroads in the years before the Civil War as many in the state provided safe haven for slaves seeking freedom on the Underground Railroad. The state’s capital is Indianapolis, home of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Indiana is also home to the University of Notre Dame, the birthplace of Michael Jackson, and the Jackson Five. Indiana has a humid continental climate with cold winters and warm, wet summers. Snowfall across the state ranges from 15-80 inches annually along with regular freezing temperatures. In 2012, Indiana was ranked eighth in the list of the top twenty tornado prone states.
