Are electric vehicles the cars of tomorrow? Well, it depends on who you ask and what you expect out of your daily driver. If you’ve paid attention to the news lately, America’s new climate bill could solidify the country’s stance on going green and reducing carbon emissions. The new bill might even create up to 1.5 million jobs by 2030. An interesting side note, the legislation would give buyers of used electric cars a much needed tax credit. We can hear the “cha-ching” sound at the Elon Musk controlled dealerships already. But not so fast. We aren’t moving at the speed of light just yet. So before you start scouting charging stations, you should ask yourself: is it worth it to buy an electric vehicle?
Electric Cars Aren’t For Everyone
Even with some government assistance, electric vehicles will remain pricier than traditional gasoline powered cars. These high prices are, in part, are due to battery shortages, which rely on raw materials like lithium. There’s also that nagging chip shortage putting a strain on all new car purchases. You also need a place to charge your electric vehicle. While their sprouting up quicker than traditional petroleum service stations, charging stations for electric vehicles are still few and far between. If you’re lucky enough to have an attached garage, you could rely on an at-home charging set-up. But for most Americans without a garage, you could be in for long waits at the nearest charging port. For reasons of practicality, it makes more sense for two-car families to invest in an electric car for the novelty or experimenting with modes of transportation. Again, this could come down to a divisive issue between the haves and have-nots. Middle and lower class families are still much more likely to invest in used gasoline engines as opposed to electrics. But just because an electric car isn’t in your price range just yet doesn’t mean you can’t make your current ride shine. Electric Cars Still Have Miles to Go…
Range anxiety will be a constant reality for anyone who owns an electric car. If you’re out sporting around in the latest EV model, you will have to keep a careful eye on range meter. It’s not like just zipping in and out of a gas station when you’re low on energy. Real foresight will have to be put into longer range trips… at least until battery lifespans are improved upon. There’s also the issue of maintenance. Finding someone who can routinely service an electric car in a timely manner might take a whole other act of congress. (And we know how slowly the wheels of change turn in today’s post-pandemic world). While the nascent electric car industry will surely close the gap in the years to come, it’s safe to say that traditional gasoline powered tech won’t be stranded alongside the road anytime soon.
