Missouri was admitted into the United States of America on August 10th, 1821 as the 24th state. Missouri was formed as a result of the Missouri Compromise; it was intended to balance the power of Slave states and Free states in the federal government. Containing the junction of the Missouri and Mississippi rivers, the state became the supply route and launching point for most of the westward expansion of American settlers, owing to its massive growth. The Santa Fe and Oregon trails began in Missouri as well as the Pony Express and Overland Butterfield Mail Route. Missouri was the site of the 1904 Olympics, the first ever held in the United States. It is the birthplace of famous writers Maya Angelou and Mark Twain, and the only state in the United States with a restaurant in a cave, which is located in Richland. Missouri generally has a humid continental climate with cold winters and long, hot summers. Due to its location in the interior of the United States, the state often experiences extreme temperatures. The state’s winters have a decent amount of snowfall and the summers are extremely hot and dry. In the spring, the state is susceptible to tornadoes and tropical cyclones, and averages about 35 tornadoes annually.
