On July 10th, 1890, Wyoming became the 44th state to join the Union. Wyoming is a large state, 10th in size, yet last in population, making it the second least densely populated state in the country. It is home to the Wind River and Teton mountain ranges, the Yellowstone and Jackson lakes, and the Bighorn and North Platte rivers. The Yellowstone region became the world’s first national park in 1872, and is renowned for its incredible natural beauty. Cheyenne is Wyoming’s capital and also its largest city, with a mere 91,738 residents. Wyoming has a semi-arid and continental climate, with temperature and weather extremes relative to the rest of the country. Much of the state is prone to severe thunderstorms, and portions are susceptible to tornadoes, and depending on location and elevation, snow and ice can fall in large quantities as well.
