Originally sighted by French explorers, Wisconsin was a part of the U.S. Northwest Territory before gaining its own territorial designation in 1836. Later, Wisconsin became the 30th state in the United States on May 29th, 1848. The origin of the name Wisconsin is uncertain but it is believed to come from an Algonquian Indian word that means “long river.” The state is dotted with numerous freshwater lakes, rivers, and streams, and its overall geography is largely one of rolling pasture lands, farms, and a network of towns varying in size. The state’s capital is Milwaukee, which is also the state’s largest city. Wisconsin is home to the historic football field Lambeau Field in Green Bay, and the largest water-themed park in the nation, Noah’s Ark. Wisconsin has a humid continental climate with warm summers and cold winters. Wisconsin is known for heavy snowfall during Winter, averaging between 40 to 160 inches.
