As a former member of the Dakota Territory, North Dakota became the 39th state of the United States on November 2nd, 1889. The name Dakota comes from the Sioux Indians, which is what they called themselves. North Dakota joined the United States the same day as South Dakota did, and is located in the Great Plains region of the US. The state’s capital is Bismarck, and largest city is Fargo. North Dakota is home to the world’s largest buffalo monument, the world famous Paul Broste Rock Museum, and the International Peace Garden. North Dakota has a continental climate with hot summers and extremely cold winters. North Dakota also has some of the windiest areas in the United States, frequent severe thunderstorms, and very active tornado season.
