On December 7th, 1787, Delaware, one of the original thirteen colonies, was the first to ratify the US Constitution, making it the first state in the Union, hence the nickname “The First State”. Delaware is the second smallest and sixth least populated state in the country, yet is sixth in population density. Delaware is divided into three counties, which are New Castle, Kent, and Sussex, of which, the latter two are mostly agricultural and the former is industrialized. Its capitol city is Dover, and its largest city is Wilmington, which has a modest population of 70,000. Delaware has a humid subtropical climate with cold winters and hot, humid summers. Delaware has relatively mild weather, however, summer heat and potentially large winter storms can cause extreme damage to valuables.
