urban farming custom metal barn

The future of farming is in jeopardy due to a number of reasons. For starters, changes to the immigration policy could have a negative effect on the agriculture market. Also, newly repealed environmental protections could mean that climate change could get much, much worse in the coming decades. In order to stay ahead of the industry and find an efficient alternative to traditional farming, a Boston-based firm has started growing veggies in converted freight shipping containers.

A New Form of Urban Farming

According to the story on USA Today, the group, called Freight Farm, started in 2010. Their goal was to bring viable, space-efficient farming techniques to all climates and skill levels year-round. A recent expansion into Phoenix, Arizona could prove that this alternative method of growing vegetables could be viable in even the most unforgiving climates. There are also Freight Farm units in the Glendale, Arizona area, providing even more evidence that urban farming could make farm-to-table a reality to everyone.

The methods involved in growing produce inside of a freight container are meant to be as efficient as possible. Without any access to natural sunlight or soil, water is delivered to the plants in a nutrient-rich system based on hydroponics, a method of growing plants without soil that uses much, much less water. Urban farmers also use red and blue lights, the spectrums used in photosynthesis, to further increase efficiency and save as much energy as possible. According to the report, the entire growing process can be almost twice as fast as a traditional farm while using far fewer resources. This allows these new freight farms to produce more, cater better to each specific community, and fill specific orders for restaurants while keeping produce as fresh as possible.

One of the downsides, however, is the price of one of these converted shipping containers. According to the story, they are sold for around $85,000 each for 320 square feet of space. A more affordable alternative is to invest in a custom metal barn from us at Elephant.
